Van Der Hart, Henry
Henry Van Der Hart, born July 17, 1931 in rural Pella, Iowa, was called to be with his Lord on July 2, 2012. He was a farmer and an avid gardener, and after spending his life in Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico and Arizona, tended his final spring garden in Mobile, Alabama. He served as a medic on the front lines during the Korean conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Van Der Hart; sisters, Stella and Nelly; brothers, Thomas, John, and Jacob; and granddaughter Deborah Van Der Hart. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Van Der Hart; sons Tim (Michelle), Mark (Dorcas), and Phillip (Lisa); daughter Rhoda and husband Tom Herder; grandchildren Esther, Matthew, Joseph, Bethany, Priscilla, Mary, Joshua, Gabriel, David, Levi, Michael, Julia, Josiah, Alexandria, Alicia, and Jeffrey; and great grandchildren Sophia, Cade, Ezra, Titus, Cyrus, Olivia, Nathan, and Savanna. His funeral will be on July 16, 2012 at 10:00 am in Goodyear, Arizona at Thompson Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Institute for Cancer Research at 1759 R. Amelia Sernas, 78, of Avondale died July 22, 2012 in Goodyear, AZ. She was born December 19, 1933 in San Angelo, TX to Cesairo and Aurora Hernandez. She moved to Arizona as a child in 1940.
Mrs. Sernas is survived by her husband Sostenes Sernas; daughter Sandra Sernas; son Alex Sernas; sister Consuelo Cooper; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Joseph Sernas in 2009.
Visitation for Amelia will take place July 27th at 9:00am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 539 E. La Pasada Blvd., Goodyear, AZ. The rosary will be at 10:00am and the mass will begin at 10:45, Fr. Paul Ybarra officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Omalee Burdine, 84, of Buckeye, AZ died July 23, 2012 in Goodyear. She was born January 28, 1928 in what was then a rural county, in what is now Oklahoma City, OK, to George and Sylvia Goodman. She moved to Arizona in 1962. She worked in accounting for Lockheed Martin for many years.
Mrs. Burdine is survived by her son Stephen Burdine; her sister Claudene Beisel; her brothers Jasper K. and Clarence Goodman. She was preceded in death by her husband Otis, 2 sisters and a brother.
She will be buried next to her husband Otis at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on Monday, July 30, 2012. A committal service will take place at 10:00am.
DeGarmo, Gregory David
Gregory David DeGarmo, 20, of Goodyear, Arizona passed from this life of natural causes on Monday, August 6, 2012 at West Valley Hospital.
The son of David L. DeGarmo and Ruth E. (Andreasen) DeGarmo, Gregory was born in Pontiac, Illinois on October 23, 1991. He was born with a congenital brain malformation that left him profoundly developmentally disabled. However, Gregory deeply enriched his family, church, neighbors, and school with his simple affection. He enjoyed spending time and travelling with his family, listening to music, and watching sports on television. Early this year, Gregory served daily as a supportive practice audience as his sister, Stacey, prepared for her senior horn recital at Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ). Later in the spring, he was in the audience for another sister, Kristin, as she performed her senior voice recital at Evangel University (Springfield, MO). Gregory attended West Valley Assembly of God and was a student at Desert Edge High School. Before moving with his family to Arizona in 2002, Gregory lived in Dwight, Illinois.
He is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. David L. DeGarmo (Goodyear, AZ); maternal grandmother Emily Andreasen (Nixa, MO); paternal grandfather Rev. Leon DeGarmo (Cape Coral, FL); sisters Kristin DeGarmo and Stacey DeGarmo (both of Goodyear, AZ); and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Gregory was preceded in death by maternal grandfather Rev. Albert Andreasen and paternal grandmother Lillian DeGarmo.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 11, 2012, 11:00 am, at West Valley Assembly of God, 1781 N. Central Avenue, Goodyear, Arizona. Visitation will occur Friday, August 10, 2012, 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Rd., Goodyear, Arizona. Interment will immediately follow the memorial service. Mary Margaret (Henkel) Johnson 86 of Goodyear went to be with the Lord on Thursday August 2, 2012.
Born inOhio, The Johnson family moved toArizonain 1956 where they raised 5 children.
Preceded in death by her eldest daughter Susan Rae McColm she is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald J Johnson Sr,, children Donald Johnson Jr, (Kari) of Cedar City UT, Rebecca (Becki) Johnson of Glendale, Clark Johnson (Kristine) of Goodyear and Joseph Johnson Sr. of Payson.
Grandchildren, Dr. Clark McDonough (Veronica) of Georgia, Vickie McGee, Krista Johnson, Donald Johnson III., Clifford Johnson (Jennifer), Rachel Brockway (Brett) of Phoenix and Christopher McDonough, Joseph Johnson Jr, Amanda Johnson, Ethan Johnson of Payson. Taylor Adair (George) of Buckeye and 10 Great-Grandchildren.
Mary was active in local politics and served as precinct committee chairman for many years in Maryvale. When they moved to Goodyear, raising and racing Greyhound’s became her passion. She found homes for those retired or unable to race. She loved trees and gardening growing many of her own vegetables. An independent spirit, giving back to society, always keeping busy and strong family values were qualities passed on to her children and grand-children.
Services will be on Friday August 10th, 2012 at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S Litchfield Rd, Goodyear with visitation at 1:00 pm and services at 2:00 pm.
Burial will be at theNationalMemorialCemetery.

Willard Arthur (Art) Hill of Buckeye, Arizona passed away August 6, 2012. Willard Arthur Hill was born November 20, 1940 in Columbus, Mississippi to Willard and Merle Hill (deceased). He grew up in Columbus and attended S.D. Lee High School and University of Southern Mississippi. He worked his way up in the pharmaceutical industry and retired from Baxter Pharmaceutical Company. He and Mary his wife of 49 years met in high school and married in 1963. He was a loving husband and father to one son Joseph Arthur and one grandson Wyatt Joseph Hill of Goodyear, AZ. Arthur has one sister Becky Johnson of Oxford, Mississippi. He was an avid vintage car collector and loved being a Ham Radio Net Controller. Arthur lost his valiant battle with cancer while in Hospice of the Valley. There will be no service. Contributions can be made in Arthur’s memory to HOSPICE of the VALLEY 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
Gloria Piazza, 82, of Payson, died July 29, 2012 in Goodyear, AZ. She was born June 7, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY.
She and her family moved to Arizona in 1969 and moved to Payson from Phoenix in 1989.
Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother was an excellent cook. She won the Rim Country St. Patty’s Day cook off.
She is survived by her husband Philip Piazza; daughter, Linda Hichborn and husband George; daughter, JoAnn Piazza; son, Gary J. Piazza and wife Mary Anne; son, Thomas C. Piazza and wife Cheryl; son, Michael P. Piazza; sister, Florence Ann Terranova; her loyal companion, Bianca; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Gloria was preceded in death by her son Philip J. Piazza.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2012. Visitation from 10am to 11am with service at 11am at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Rd. in Goodyear, AZ. Burial will follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
Diana Parent, 62, of Avondale, AZ died July 27, 2012 at Hospice of the Valley Palm Valley in Goodyear, AZ. She was born July 19, 1950 in Fargo, ND. She moved to Arizona January 19, 2001. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband George Parent, her son John Montalbano, her granddaughter Faith Montalbano and her grandson Derek Montalbano.
John Burgess, 78, passed away July 23, 2012 in Goodyear, AZ. He was born February 24, 1934 in Wamego, KS to John and Veda Burgess. He grew up in rural Kansas, and then as a married man lived in Portland and upstate Oregon. He served in the United States Army. He was a university professor for a living and authored a book about their childhood in Kansas with his brother George entitled, “Fresh Feathered Eggs”. He is survived by his wife Susan, his sons Scott and Phillip, his brother George and so many more loving friends and family members. There will be multiple celebrations of his life in Oregon and then he will be laid to rest in the family plot in Kansas.
